This coating is mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen and is applied to the surface of various materials through physical evaporation deposition or chemical vapor deposition.

The development of DLC coating has gone through the stages from the first generation of TiN to the second generation of TiCN, TiC, the third generation of DLC, and finally the fourth generation of cubic boron nitride. In the 1970s, German scientists used ion beam deposition to deposit single-valent carbon ions onto a substrate at room temperature to produce DLC thin films.
